The Raspberry Pi AI Camera is a compact camera module based on the intelligent Sony IMX500 vision sensor. This advanced sensor combines a 12-megapixel CMOS image sensor with a dedicated processor engine for real-time inference of common neural networks. The camera enables users to develop advanced AI-based applications without the need for an external accelerator.
The camera augments still images or captured video with tensor metadata, keeping the Raspberry Pi computer’s main processor free for other tasks. Metadata support in the libcamera and Picamera2 libraries, and the rpicam-apps suite, makes it easy for beginners to get started while offering advanced users unmatched power and flexibility.
The camera is compatible with all Raspberry Pi computers with a CSI camera connector. The PCB layout and mounting hole positions match those of the Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3, but the overall depth is greater to accommodate the IMX500 sensor and extended optical system.
